‘Jeopardy!’ Honors Alex Trebek with $250,000 Donation to Homeless Shelter

Television’s beloved quiz show, Jeopardy!, has made a significant impact beyond the screen by donating $250,000 to the Trebek Center, a homeless shelter in Northridge, California. The shelter, located at the site of the former Skateland roller rink, bears the name of the late Alex Trebek, who was known for his generosity and commitment to uplifting those in need.

A Legacy of Giving

During the Tournament of Champions, Jeopardy! matched the event’s grand prize with a donation to Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission’s Trebek Center. This contribution adds to the $500,000 Trebek himself donated to the project before his passing in 2020.

His wife, Jean Trebek, expressed her gratitude, saying, “Jeopardy!’s kindness continues to reflect Alex’s enduring wish to support underserved communities.”

The Trebek Center is set to transform the 23,000-square-foot Northridge Skateland, a venue that entertained families for over six decades, into a lifeline for those experiencing homelessness. After the pandemic forced Skateland’s closure, Hope of the Valley stepped in, purchasing the property to address the dire need for interim housing in the San Fernando Valley.

The center will offer more than just beds. It plans to provide comprehensive support, including mental health services, job training, housing navigation, life skills coaching, substance abuse counseling, and medical care.

Once completed, the facility will house over 100 beds and serve as a haven for individuals seeking a path to stability.

Bringing this vision to life required the combined efforts of several key supporters. Hope of the Valley worked closely with local Councilmember John Lee, who championed the project as part of Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti’s “A Bridge Home” initiative. This endorsement unlocked critical funding for renovations.

Additionally, the Trebek family, Beachbody, Shepherd Church, and other generous donors helped raise the $2 million down payment needed for the $7 million purchase. Their collective contributions ensure that the center can provide essential services to those in need.

Trebek’s legacy of compassion is embedded in every aspect of the center.

On social media, Jeopardy! shared that his memory will “live on through the thousands of lives transformed at the Trebek Center.”

The donation underscores the show’s commitment to making a tangible difference, much like its iconic host did throughout his life.

Hope for the Future

With the Trebek Center poised to open its doors, it stands as a testament to the power of community and the enduring impact of generosity. As a beacon of hope for individuals experiencing homelessness, the center continues Alex Trebek’s mission of supporting underserved populations and ensuring they have the resources to rebuild their lives.
